By June 2016, the installed capacity of the country stands at 304760.75 MW. The Overall generation in the country has been increased from 1048.673 BU during 2014-15 to 1107.386 BU during the year 2015-16. Still, the 18,452 villages have to be electrified which stands at 40% of the total villages. In response to the expected growth, Government of India has initiated several plans and schemes to support the the electricity sector. GoI is taking up the most comprehensive power sector reform ever, Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojna (UDAY) scheme to turn around the distribution companies from making heavy losses. Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has launched a National Mission program on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) with the mission of making India a dominant player in Power Electronics. India’s National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) with the help of USAID launched its first in a series of training programs aimed at building a Smart Grid, which as it will ensure 24x7 access to power for all. Solar energy is also seeing a major boost with 157% increase in solar power capacity since 2014 of 4,132 MW.
Research and Development is a vital component to generate trained and skilled workforce which is critical to solve the technical hurdles. In light of this, the workshop aims to disseminate recent developments in the power sector. The first edition of RIPE 2016 shall bring together experts in power engineering and researchers for information sharing and collaboration. This workshop shall be an annual workshop to be conducted in the third week of September every year. This workshop would benefit early, mid-career and senior researchers who could network with established experts, take way research problems and recent technological developments in power engineering provided by experts.
